LazyRocker.com's Raymond van Haaren wanted to know more about Giulio Garghentini what resulted in interview below (or click 'read more').
LazyRocker.com: Hello Giulio, you enjoy world fame in Italy, but could you please introduce yourself to our readers in the rest of the world?
Giulio Garghentini: Hi Raymond, I was born in 1974 in Milan (Italy), I’m a professional singer, songwriter and singing teacher. I’m a Certified Master Teacher in EVT (Estill Voice Training) a method of vocal technique and qualified to teach at the Modern Music Institute. I began to study the voice 20 years ago and as you can imagine I’ve never stopped. You could say that I live on stage. Over the years I have played on many stages and some of them very prestigious. Surely with the music I compose, but mainly with the band Dream Company (Bon Jovi tribute). Not only in Italy, but even on very important European festivals... We played a lot of times in The Netherlands!!!
LR: From what age on did you dream about a career as a rock singer?
GG: When I was 8 years old, my cousin gave me 'Ghosts in The Machine' of THE POLICE... I was captured by the sound and the voice of Sting and something happened!!! But... I decided to be a guitarist. When I was 16, the singer of my first band couldn’t play (it was very sick). I replaced him and I discovered my voice…
LR: A guitar player myself my inspiration comes from Jimmy Page, Doug Aldrich and Joe Perry. What singers inspire you? Who are your heroes? And in what way did they form you?
GG: Oh, I have a lot of heroes: George Michael, Sebastian Bach, Jeff Buckley, Chris Cornell, Terence Trent D’arby (now Sananda Maitreya), Bon Jovi, Prince, Simon Le Bon, Robert Plant, Tesla, Eric Martin… As you can see different styles that have influenced my voice in many different ways... I love them all!!I love the sweetness of George Michael, the anger of Cornell, the soul of TT D’Arby, the blues of Eric Martin…
LR: Can you tell us more about the Mantra years? What kind of band was that?
GG: We played our songs. We composed a lot of songs and we did a lot of work in the rehearsal room for many years. In those years I’ve learned a lot. It was a great school for me. We were very much appreciated in our area for both the songs and the live attitude. The guys will be in my heart forever.
LR: Same question about your band Darkfire. I found some Darkfire songs on the internet and I like it. Why did Darkfire breakup?
GG: This is a long story. The singer of those songs is not me. I have succeeded to record their second album. But in the meantime, the record label went bankrupt and the album ended up in nothing. It was really a huge disappointment. The tracks of the second album were very nice. Very hard-rock.
LR: Your Bon Jovi tribute band Dream Company is a pretty big hit, and I can see why! Did Jon Bon Jovi ever see you perform and if yes, what was his thought about you guys?
GG: Oh, I really don’t know. It would be great; maybe some files on internet, but I don’t know. The only thing I know is that Jon is a very good singer, songwriter and showman!! I love his way to play the music!!!
LR: You sing from metal to opera and everything in between. What is your favorite style?
GG: I think my voice is primarily a rock/hard-rock voice, but I really love to sing pop music of George Michael or Prince and the groove of Lenny Kravitz. These are my favorites.
LR: Now more about the present day: in October you released your debut solo album. How are the reactions so far?
GG: Really amazing! We got superb reviews from all over the world. I don’t believe yet that it's going so well.
LR: For "Believe" you teamed up with Mario Percudani (Hungryheart, Lionville). How did this happen and what can you tell us about your collaboration?
GG: We met the first time at a Dream Company gig in a big live club in Italy. After the show we spoke a lot about the release of my production and we began a very good collaboration in many ways. Mario is a very important person in my life. One of my best friends and a very professional musician, songwriter, producer.... He taught me a lot of things in these 2 years. As I tell sometimes, he is able to turn a good song into an incredible song!
LR: What does "Believe" stand for? In my review I wrote it's about believing in your dreams', is that what it meant to you?
GG: Going to quote some lyrics: “All that I need is a light, to show me the way and lead me over myself ‘cause it’s time to believe! Are you lost in your empty space? Are you living just for the pain? But what you feel, is just your need to believe!” Maybe they can help you to understand the meaning. Very difficult to explain what I mean in another way.
LR: I heard different styles on the album. It also has a certain "live on stage" vibe. How did you record "Believe"?
GG: We recorded drums and bass together. And then the other instruments!! But I agree with you!! The sound of "Believe" was born in the rehearsal room. I think that this is the reason why it has a “live sound”
LR: Are you going to tour in order to support your album?
GG: Oh yes... The first gig was November the 24th in Italy. We have another gig already fixed and we are going to organise other gigs in many European countries. I cross my fingers!!!
LR: Any other future plans you would like to share with us?
GG: The video of 'I CAN’T STAND THE RAIN' and absolutely the second album!!!
LR: Thanks for this beautiful chance to talk to you. I hope you enjoyed it too. And talking for the whole LazyRocker crew we hope to hear more from you in the future and we wish you all the best!
GG: Thank you guys!! Hope to meet you on the road very soon!!! I believe in people like you! And I'm very glad I had the opportunity to share my thoughts with you. Speak soon!!!
